Pennsylvania and Arizona Expand Truck Parking to Support Driver Safety and Compliance

Across the United States, truck parking shortages have long challenged commercial drivers and fleet managers. With limited safe and designated spots along major freight corridors, many drivers have been forced to park on highway shoulders, ramps, or other unsafe areas simply to comply with federal hours-of-service rest requirements. This creates safety risks, driver fatigue, and unnecessary operational stress for fleets. Pennsylvania and Arizona are taking meaningful action to address this nationwide issue by accelerating the expansion of truck parking along major freight routes.

In Pennsylvania, the Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is transforming existing highway right-of-way, weigh stations, and interstate on-ramps into designated truck parking spaces, adding hundreds of new spots to support drivers now. These initial additions are part of a larger plan to create more than 1,200 new truck parking spaces across 133 locations by the end of 2026. The initiative marks the first large-scale, statewide expansion of truck parking in decades, giving professional drivers safe places to rest without resorting to unsafe alternatives.

Meanwhile in Arizona, the Department of Transportation is expanding truck parking capacity at several rest areas along busy freight corridors, including a recently opened lot on Interstate 17. These investments add much-needed capacity where demand is highest and further demonstrate a proactive approach to managing freight movement and driver welfare.

These enhancements not only improve compliance with federal rest rules and reduce fatigue-related risk, they also help fleets operate more efficiently by minimizing unauthorized roadside stops and reducing schedule disruptions. Critical infrastructure like this supports the broader logistics network and strengthens supply chain reliability.

As states expand safe rest and parking infrastructure, they should also consider complementary in-route amenities that support drivers and fleets. Rest areas equipped with fueling points and truck services that accept the Energie Fuel Card provide additional efficiency benefits. With real-time reporting, purchase controls, and simplified reporting, drivers and fleet managers can focus on safety and uptime to be confident that fueling expenses and compliance needs are supported on-route.

As truck parking infrastructure continues to improve in Pennsylvania and Arizona, integrating accessible fueling solutions into these expanded rest areas will further enhance fleet efficiency. When drivers can rest, refuel, and access essential services in one compliant stop, it reduces unnecessary detours, conserves drive time, and improves route planning accuracy.

Fueling locations that accept the Energie Fuel Card allow fleets to maintain spending controls, gain real-time transaction visibility, and simplify tax reporting, all while supporting drivers on the road. Smart infrastructure paired with smart payment solutions creates a stronger, safer, and more efficient freight network for everyone involved.
