A retail fuel site is a standard gas station that serves the general public. Examples include Chevron, Shell, Mobil, ARCO, Valero, 76, and many other brands. These stations typically display fuel prices on large street signs. When a driver fuels at a retail station, the station charges the retail price posted at that location. Retail prices are generally higher than wholesale/cardlock prices.
A wholesale fuel site, also known as a CFN/Cardlock site, operates within a commercial fueling network. These locations serve businesses, fleets, and commercial drivers who use an approved fleet fuel card, such as the Energie Fuel Card. When a driver fuels at a CFN/Cardlock site, the station does not use the standard retail pricing formula. Instead, it applies a wholesale/cardlock pricing formula, which often delivers significant savings. In many cases, drivers save approximately $0.30 to $1.00 per gallon compared to standard retail fueling.
One important point to understand is that a station can look like a typical retail gas station while still participating in the CFN/Cardlock network. For example, a Valero, Mobil, 76, or other branded station may appear to be a standard retail location, but if it participates in the CFN/Cardlock network, Energie Fuel Card holders can receive wholesale/cardlock pricing when they fuel there.
Because of this, drivers should not rely solely on a station's brand name or street sign to determine whether it offers wholesale/cardlock pricing. Instead, they should use the approved site locator from Energie Fuel Group. The site locator identifies stations within the wholesale/cardlock network and helps drivers find the most cost-effective fueling locations. To maximize savings, we recommend using CFN/Cardlock locations whenever possible and encouraging all drivers to do the same.
