Choosing the Best Greases for Electric Vehicles

Best greases for electric vehiclesa and their purposeWe know the importance of maintaining proper lubrication for gas and diesel vehicles, but did you know that EVs also require proper lubrication? Despite electric vehicles such as Tesla not having the same mechanical systems as gas-powered vehicles, most electric vehicles still have numerous electric motors and components that require proper maintenance. We also must consider that EVs and HEVs are built with newer materials such as copper, plastics, and resins. As a result, there is greater importance in using the right grease for your EV to protect these materials and electrical components. The information presented in this article will be based on what Tesla recommends for its electric vehicles, but much of this information can apply to other EVs and HEVs as well.

Just like gas and diesel vehicles, EVs require specific lubricants for different applications. For brake pads, a light coating of high-temperature copper anti-seize paste is recommended for the contact area between the pad and caliper. For the vehicle’s suspension, a light coating of high-performance lithium-based grease is recommended, such as Liqui Moly LM 50 Litho HT. The lithium-based grease would need to be applied to the contact areas of the sway bar, sway bar bushings, and brackets.

As for the transmission input, please consult your vehicle’s manual, but Tesla notes that Mobiltemp SHC 32 Grease is recommended for use on the shaft splines. Mobiltemp SHC 32 by Mobil is known for its high performance and is specifically designed for extreme temperatures. This grease features polyalphaolefin synthetic base fluids with organo-clay, which is a non-soap thickener.

As far as general greasing for locks, latches, and hinges goes, Tesla recommends lubrication grease suitable for the application. Liqui Moly makes Lock Care & De-Icer, which is a lubricant specifically made for locks and also helps care for and de-ice door locks. Another great high-performance grease suitable for a wide range of applications is Long-Life Grease + MoS2.

Proper maintenance of electrical components is a big concern for EVs and HEVs, and because of this, electrical connectors require a specific kind of lubrication. Tesla recommends an aerosol-based dielectric grease for its electrical connectors, but other dielectric greases may also work for this application when compatible with the manufacturer’s specifications. The reason electrical connectors require dielectric grease is that it is non-conductive and helps seal out moisture and dirt to prevent electrical corrosion. The best practice is to apply a thin layer to the appropriate areas to help protect the connection.

Lastly, a water-resistant, silicone-based grease is recommended for electrical posts and ground points. Liqui Moly makes Silicone Grease Transparent, which is suitable for many application areas and has a wide temperature range. Silicone Grease Transparent also works on metal and plastic pairings. A silicone-based grease helps prevent corrosion and seals out contamination by providing a water-resistant barrier. Silicone grease is also non-conductive, making it useful for certain electric vehicle applications.

Although electric vehicles require different maintenance than gas and diesel vehicles, proper EV maintenance is still highly encouraged. Hopefully, this introductory guide will help you determine which type of grease works best for each application on your EV. Much like any vehicle, knowing how to maintain your EV will help support its performance, efficiency, and durability.
