Weekly Fuel Market Update – Week of September 29, 2025

Good Afternoon Customers,

Buena Tarde Clientes,

Pump prices remain steady this week.

But we could feel an increase in the coming days… Regrettably there was an accident and a fire at a local Chevron refinery. More on this below.

The U.S. national average for regular gasoline is about $3.15 per gallon; virtually unchanged from last week.

A seasonal drop in driving demand, combined with the switch to cheaper winter-blend fuel, is helping keep prices in check.

Crude oil prices saw little movement. WTI (West Texas Intermediate) crude is hovering near $61–62 per barrel, roughly the same as last week.

In the Pacific Northwest, drivers are finally seeing better prices at the pump.

A major pipeline that was shut down earlier last month (sparking a 20¢ price surge in Washington and Oregon) is back in service, and fuel supplies are normalizing.

Gas prices in the region have begun to come down as a result. (Washington’s average, which briefly surpassed California’s, is now trending down.)

El Segundo, CA – Chevron Refinery Accident

Last night big fire broke out at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery, one of the largest in Southern California. This plant makes about 20% of the region’s fuel, so anytime it has trouble, people worry about pump prices jumping.

The good news? Early reports say the damage looks limited, and the refinery might be back to normal pretty soon. Still, even short disruptions can nudge wholesale prices up quickly, so we’re keeping an eye on it. If it takes longer than expected to come back online, drivers in SoCal, including San Diego, could see prices climb.

Retail Fuel Price Comparison

Regular Gasoline:

San Diego County: averaging $4.768/gal (down slightly from $4.770 last week)
California (statewide): $4.642/gal (was $4.646 last week, essentially flat)
U.S. national: $3.15/gal (about the same as last week’s $3.15)

Diesel:

San Diego County: $5.051/gal (just under last week’s $5.060)
California (statewide): $5.159/gal (virtually unchanged from $5.160 last week)
U.S. national: $3.75/gal (about the same as last week’s $3.74)
