Summer is Near, and Retails Rates are beginning to feel the heat:
Fuel prices have begun a late-spring increase.
San Diego drivers saw a modest rise in gasoline costs over the past week, partly due to seasonal demand and a West Coast refinery outage (NorCal) . It’s not a dramatic spike, but a reminder that summer travel and supply hiccups can take prices upward.
Overall, this increase is gradual and far from the record highs we saw in recent years. (We can all use lower rates this 2025!)
Retail Fuel Prices (Week of May 19)
Here’s how pump prices compare to last week for San Diego, California, and the U.S. – for both regular gasoline and diesel:
San Diego County:
Regular unleaded is around $4.85/gal, up 7¢ from last week.
Diesel is about $4.83/gal, roughly 2¢ lower than last week’s average (essentially holding steady).
California (statewide avg):
Regular unleaded is about $4.91/gal, basically flat from last week’s $4.90.
Diesel sits around $5.08/gal, up roughly 8¢ from about $5.00 last week.
U.S. National (avg):
Regular unleaded is about $3.18/gal, a 4¢ increase over last week.
Diesel averages $3.53/gal, up roughly 5¢ from last week.
(For context, San Diego’s regular gas is $4.84, which is 6.8¢ higher than a week ago, while the U.S. regular average is up 4.7¢ over the same period.)
