Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a specially formulated solution designed to reduce harmful emissions produced by diesel engines. It is also one of the best-selling products offered by Energie Fuel. But what is the proper way to store and handle DEF?
Whether you purchase DEF in a 2.5-gallon jug, a 55-gallon drum, or a 330-gallon tote, the most important thing is to keep it in a climate-controlled environment and out of direct sunlight. The shelf life of DEF largely depends on how it is stored. If the storage facility is located outdoors where the sun can heat the containers, the DEF solution’s shelf life will be much shorter compared to storage in an enclosed, air-conditioned facility.
According to the ISO 22241 standard, the ideal storage temperature for DEF is between 12°F (-11.1°C) and 86°F (30°C). DEF generally lasts longer when stored at lower temperatures. In most parts of the United States, DEF has an average shelf life of about one year. However, for most businesses operating fleets, DEF is typically consumed well before it reaches its expiration date.
When it comes to handling DEF, the product is non-hazardous and easy to use, but dedicated dispensing equipment must be used. This means you should not reuse funnels, pitchers, hoses, or other equipment that has been used for diesel fuel or other fluids. Dispensing equipment should be cleaned with distilled or deionized water, followed by a DEF rinse. Avoid using tap water, as it can compromise the integrity of the DEF solution.
